Getting around Trellis

Two menus stay visible everywhere: the workspace switcher and the user menu.

Trellis has two menus that stay visible everywhere in the product: the workspace switcher in the top-left, and the user menu in the top-right. Between them, you can jump between workspaces you're a member of, open workspace-level settings, access your personal account settings, and sign out.

Workspace switcher

Click your workspace name or icon in the top-left to open the workspace switcher. From here you can:

  • See which workspace you're currently in — the header shows the workspace name, avatar, and its plan
  • Switch to another workspace you're a member of by clicking its name in the list. The current one is marked with a check
  • Open workspace settings by clicking the gear icon in the header. Goes straight to Settings → General where you can update the workspace name, logo, company details, and (as an owner) transfer or delete the workspace
  • Set up a new workspace with Add new workspace at the bottom of the list. Useful if you're spinning up a fresh project for a different client or team
  • Invite a teammate to the current workspace from the bottom of the switcher (visible to Owners and Admins on Enterprise plans only)

User menu

Click your avatar in the top-right to open the user menu. This is your entry point into everything personal to your account:

  • Profile — your name, email, avatar, and contact details
  • Preferences — theme, analytics cookies, and tutorial restart
  • Manage Notifications — how and where you want Trellis to notify you
  • Security & Authentication — sign-in methods, passkeys, 2FA, recovery codes, and signed-in devices
  • Log Time — jump straight into your timesheet from anywhere (hidden for Viewers)
  • Sign Out (⌥Q) — end your session on this device

Customize your sidebar

Everyone can tailor their own sidebar to what they actually use. Unlike workspace-level Features (which turn areas on and off for everyone), this is a personal setting — your changes don't affect anyone else's view.

Click the Customize icon at the top of the sidebar to open the customize dialog. From there you can:

  • Toggle any item on or off so it appears or hides in your sidebar
  • Reorder items within a group by dragging the handle on the left
  • Show as a widget instead of a link for items that support it (currently Projects and Notes). Show widget turns the item into an embedded panel inside the sidebar itself; Show link keeps it as a plain menu link
  • Reset to default to undo all your changes and go back to the standard layout

Who can do what

ActionOwnerAdminEditorMemberContributorViewer
Open the workspace switcher and switch between workspaces
Open workspace settings via the gear icon
Add a new workspace
Invite a teammate from the switcher (Enterprise only)
Open the user menu and access Personal settings
Use the Log Time shortcut in the user menu
Customize your own sidebar (toggle, reorder, show as widget)

Both menus are visible to everyone in the workspace. What differs by role is what's inside them: the switcher's Invite member button appears only for Owners and Admins on the Enterprise plan, and the user menu hides Log Time for Viewers. Opening the gear icon takes you to Workspace → General where what you can actually edit depends on your role. Sidebar customization is personal — anyone in the workspace can rearrange their own view without affecting anyone else's.
